V 22 THE SUNDAY OREGONIAN, PORTLAND, MAY 17, 1903. TRAVELERS' GUIDE. THE PALATIAL OIGOIH BUILOINB CARNEGIE'S GIFTS MCRE THAN $90,000,000 FIRST COMPLETE AUTHENTIC LIST OF THE IRON KING'S DONATIONS TOWARDS EDUCATION. THE amount of Andrew Carnegie's voluntary gifts to cities, towns. In dividuals and institutions for various purposes has nearly reached the HOO.OOO.OW mark. "Within the past year Mr. Carnegie has given away the largest sums since io began the distribution of his surplus Income. More than one-third of the total -was given to his native Scotland and to the city in which he grew from a tele graph messenger boy to the greatest iron master of the age, and in which he laid the foundation of his vast fortune. . To Scotland, where Mr. Carnegie now is at Skibo Castle, the sum of $17,713,750 was do nated, and Pittsburg received $18,804,000. If the amount contributed to Allegheny is included with Pittsburg's, the total for the twin cities Is $19,139,000. Every dollar that Mr. Carnegie has paid out has been for the 'improvement mentally, physically and otherwise of his fellow-men. Very little lias gone direct to the maintenance of charitable Institutions. Mr. Carnegie does not believe in supporting paupers or other dependents his whole purpose being to Ihelp men and women to be self-sustaining. The list below Is an itemized account of the various gifts made to cities and towns by Mr. Carnegie up to the time of ills departure for Europe, April 24: UNITED STATES. City or town. Purpose.
